Ivory Park honours 106-year-old community elder
Residents and the ward committee of Ivory Park came together to celebrate a beautiful milestone as a community elder marked her 106th birthday with family, neighbours and friends.
Ivory Park residents gathered on April 10 at Nolukhanyo Creche to celebrate the long-lived life and birthday of 106-year-old Mamohale Tabane Mokhabuki.
Loved ones, including family and friends, contributed to making the day possible for the centenarian. Even though her birthday had already passed, the community still honoured the remarkable life of Mokhabuki.
The centenarian was born in March 1920 in Limpopo, in a village called Ga-Sekgopo. She relocated to Ivory Park to live with her family in 2021 as she was struggling to do things for herself.

The involvement of ward committee members such as Ephraim Khoza, Benjamin Phatela, Freedom Khumalo, Community Development Worker Lonza Ngwetjana and some neighbours demonstrated unity within the community.

Khumalo explained the reason for their involvement as the ward committee in the centenarian’s birthday celebration.
“We felt it was a need to hold this birthday celebration for her because, as the community, we saw that it was her birthday last month, and she didn’t get to celebrate that milestone; she didn’t even have a cake, and that was not right. We then thought of this joint idea.”
The children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Mokhabuki expressed their gratitude for the support that every community member contributed to make the day possible for her.

“When we look at our grandma, we think not a lot of people actually get to her age, and that needs to be celebrated, and we would really like to thank everyone who helped and made sure it happened. Without them, things were not going to be easy,” said the granddaughter of Mokhabuki, Samantha Mabulana.
Community members and the ward committee said that it was important to celebrate this birthday not just as a day but as a life that has witnessed different generations and eras, which is rare nowadays.
The birthday celebration ended on a heart-warming note, leaving other senior citizens amazed by Mokhabuki’s age and wishing to also live as long.
