Young chess stars shine at Midrand Juniors Rapid & Blitz

A day where young chess players’ focus, quick and strategic thinking were put to the test in a competitive chess tournament.

Young chess players came from schools in Midrand and other areas to have fun and challenge one another for the Midrand Junior Rapid & Blitz tournament at Halfway House Primary School.

By hosting this tournament, the Midrand Chess Club aims to help young players further improve their chess and critical thinking skills.

Tournament director of the Midrand Chess Club, Kgosimang Molefe, said most of the players are used to playing online, and that causes them to make more mistakes, but this tournament and more to come will help them overcome that.

The formats used in the tournament were rapid and blitz, which challenged the players’ speed and thinking skills.Nine-year-old Curro Midrand player, Elisha Wafo, shared what she learned from other players.

“Not everything you do is correct, so you have to be willing to learn from others, and you have to take your time since you have 10 minutes to play,” said Elisha.

The tournament ended with a prize-giving, and the winners received medals and trophies.
