A security guard was left fighting for his life after a group of about 20 armed suspects allegedly stormed a supermarket in Rabie Ridge during a violent business robbery in the early hours of May 18.

According to police, the suspects opened fire during the robbery before fleeing with cash, cigarettes, and an ATM cash box containing an undisclosed amount of money.

The incident took place at a supermarket opposite a garage along Freedom Drive at about 02:12. Officers from the Rabie Ridge Police Station responded to reports of gunfire at the premises.

Ekurhuleni district police spokesperson, Captain Nelda Sekgobela, said upon arrival, police found a shop teller at the scene who confirmed that the suspects had already fled after the shooting.

“The police were taken inside the shop and were told that an ATM box with an undisclosed amount was removed and loaded inside a white Isuzu bakkie; a till was opened, and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken,” said Sekgobela.

She added that the suspects also stole cash that had been kept inside a plastic bag on one of the store shelves, as well as various cigarette brands from the supermarket.

During the robbery, the security guard on duty reportedly attempted to respond to the shooting when he was shot in the lower and middle body. He was later rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

Police said no arrests had been made so far, and investigations into attempted murder and business robbery are continuing.
