Pikitup addresses three-day Kyalami Garden Refuse Site shutdown
Pikitup finally responded to the issues raised by Midrand residents, councillor David Foley, and the recent closure of the Kyalami Garden Refuse Site, as reported in earlier articles.
On May 12, The Midrand Reporter published a report on the concerns raised by residents of Midrand and Ward 94 councillor David Foley about the overload and the dumping of unwanted waste such as rubble and couches at the Kyalami Garden Refuse Site.
Following those concerns and that report, Pikitup conducted a three-day shutdown to clean up the site, which reopened on May 22.

In a follow-up article, Foley provided us with the information on the three-day shutdown and possible opening date.
Pikitup spokesperson Anthony Selepe was also contacted to address some of the concerns that were raised by the councillor, including the usage of the Kyalami site by residents from Marlboro, Woodmead and Bryanston.
“Woodmead garden site was closed for an upgrade; it is currently operational at a minimal scale, whereby only residents are allowed to use the site. All these nearby garden sites are operational now,” said Selepe.
He explained about what measures are being taken to manage the increased volume of waste at the Kyalami site.

“The site is temporarily closed for a day or two, waste is collected daily for disposal, and we also add resources from other sites to clear accumulated waste. This is done as and when possible, when the site has reached maximum capacity.”
Selepe also urged residents to read and adhere to the directions that are written on the signage at the gate of the Kyalami site.
“The signage is installed on site to give directions on what is accepted or not accepted. Publishing the matter will go a long way in assisting to educate residents about what type of waste and which quantities are acceptable at such sites.”
