Midrand and Ivory Park show mixed trends in fourth-quarter crime stats

SAPS crime stats show Midrand and Ivory Park prominent in many categories, including a disturbing increase in property-related crimes.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has released the crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2025/26 financial year, covering the period from January to March 2026.


These statistics are crucial for informing policy development and planning within the criminal justice system. Notably, the report ranks the stations based on their crime statistics, with the station at the top having the most criminal activities in their area, and the station at the bottom having the least.

In the police stations around Midrand, specifically Ivory Park and Midrand Police Stations were mentioned in most categories, with stats showing increases and decreases compared to the previous quarter.


Ivory Park saw a decrease in murders, being 13 counts lower from 42 counts in 2025 to 29 counts in 2026. In property-related crime, which refers to crimes during which tangible property of an individual or institution is taken by criminal elements without permission, and in the absence of the owner/custodian of such property, Midrand saw an increase of 382 cases reported, compared to 349 in the previous year.

They also saw a seven-count increase in rape cases, from 38 in 2025 to 45 this year. Midrand did see a four-count decrease in kidnapping crimes, from 47 last year to 43 this year.


For carjacking, both Ivory Park and Midrand saw decreases. Ivory Park saw a decrease of 47 counts compared to last year’s count of 67, and Midrand saw a 28-count decrease, from the 40-count from last year.

In Midrand other serious crimes, such as shoplifting, saw a 10.8% increase, taking it from 83 counts in 2025 to 92 counts this year. There was also a decrease in commercial crimes of 20.4%, taking it from 564 counts to 449 counts this year.


Motorists in Midrand found driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increase by seven counts, from 177 in 2025 to 184 counts in 2026.
