Long-awaited K101 road officially opens for motorists
Relief hits motorists as Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, together with Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, officially launched the long-awaited K101 Road.
The long wait for pedestrians and motorists is finally over, as Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela launched the upgraded K101 on July 8.
Construction of the project began in October 2022 and was scheduled for completion in March 2026. That date, however, was postponed.
The MEC explained, during the July 8 launch, how important it was for the delay to happen.

“We know that there were delays with completing this project, but we had to do this because, unlike other projects, this one required more infrastructure and special attention. It’s a long road that will be used daily, and it’s different to a lot of roads done before.”
She added that, before the launch, road departments from other provinces came to inspect the road, because it is an upgrade that they also want to try implementing, as it is different and new.
The launch marks a major milestone in the department’s road infrastructure projects, with the upgraded dual carriage way expected to improve issues, such as traffic congestion and accidents.

The K101 upgrade, which stretches to the N1 Brakfontein interchange, creates an important alternative route to the often-congested N1 freeway connecting the cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane.
During the launch the MEC urged motorists to not drink and drive, and also asked residents to report any cases of vandalism they see to help keep the road intact.
The R500m infrastructure investment is expected to benefit not only road users but also surrounding communities by improving access to economic opportunities and supporting safer, more efficient transport.
Ward 65 councillor Gert Visser said he is grateful for this project and its completion because it created a lot of jobs and imparted skills for a lot of people. He added that he is also looking forward to using the road, and seeing how beautiful it is.
The launch represents another step in Gauteng’s efforts to modernise the province’s road network, while supporting economic growth through improved transport infrastructure and job creation.
