Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) regional operations’ Mpho Maruping has reaffirmed that the storm water infrastructure project along Maple Road is still a work in progress.

His response comes after Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe criticised the agency, and the City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene, over delays to the repairs on Maple Drive.

Responding to concerns about the drainage system, the agency explained that one kerb inlet had been blocked by a tree growing inside the structure, preventing it from functioning properly.

“Our colleagues from Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo assisted by removing the tree, enabling the kerb inlet to be reinstated.”

He added that inspectors had also assessed another damaged kerb inlet, and that repair teams are already on site carrying out reinstatement work.

When asked what risks the unresolved storm water issue posed to nearby residents, motorists, and surrounding infrastructure, Maruping said: “The issue may result in water accumulation during rainfall, which can affect road safety and, if left unattended, may contribute to further deterioration of the road infrastructure.”

He added that recent rainfall had contributed to the deterioration of the affected area, highlighting the need for the agency to complete the repairs soon.

Providing an update on the repairs, Maruping said the agency’s teams are working on them.

“The permanent repair works are currently underway. The teams are currently on site and they will be done before end of July.”

The agency further reiterated that while it continues to address urgent maintenance issues across Midrand, the implementation of new road upgrades remains largely dependent on additional funding becoming available through future budget allocations.
