JRA delivers on State Road promise, but long-term solution still awaited

The Johannesburg Roads Agency has honoured its commitment to maintain State Road in President Park, bringing relief to motorists. However, residents had previously stated that only a tarred road would solve the recurring problems.

State Road in President Park has received much-needed maintenance from the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), following residents previously raising concerns over its deteriorating condition, among other roads in the area.

In late March, the Midrand Reporter reported on the poor state of the gravel road, which was plagued by potholes, flowing water and uneven surfaces that made travelling difficult for motorists and residents.

At the time, the JRA HOD for regional operations, Khayalethu Gqibitole, had stated that the road formed part of its ongoing maintenance programme for roads in President Park and committed to carrying out grading work.

During a visit to the area on July 16, the Midrand Reporter found that the road had been graded, improving driving conditions and fulfilling the agency’s earlier commitment.

While the recent maintenance has brought temporary relief, residents have stated that State Road remains one of the area’s most problematic roads, particularly during the rainy season.

As an unpaved gravel road, heavy rainfall often washes away sections of the surface, creating potholes and making the road difficult to navigate.

Midrand Reporter sent a media query to JRA on July 16 seeking clarity on the entity’s long-term plans for State Road, including whether there are proposals to upgrade the gravel road to a surfaced or tarred road. The JRA’s response will be published as soon as it is received.
