Bafana Ba Maths calculate their next move
Brothers Mag and Dusty Loola are building intentional hip-hop that mixes Sepedi lyricism, township realities and a strong call for self-sufficiency, with their latest single and a performance in Alex.
Tembisa-based hip-hop duo Bafana Ba Maths, managed by Nelson Thobakgale, who represents The Climb Up Art Hub, are treating every release like an equation that has to balance.
The group, made up of Limpopo-born brothers Mag from Polokwane and Dusty Loola from the same province, say the ‘Maths’ in their name is more than branding; it is how they work. “For us, ‘Maths’ is more than just a name; it has become part of our DNA,” said the duo. “We are very intentional about the type of lyrics, energy, and message we put into every song. Before we even think about releasing a record, we think about the bigger equation: How do we want the listener to experience this? What are we saying about the world around us?”

Both still hold professional jobs during the week and build the project after hours. “Music requires infrastructure,” the duo said. “It requires resources, branding, marketing, quality production, visuals and distribution – and all of those things require money. As unsigned artists, we understand the importance of being able to sustain yourself while you build. We believe artists should understand the business side of what they are doing.”
Their sound blends hip-hop, kwaito, African samples and Sepedi lyricism, which they say represents the true essence of South African hip-hop, where language, sound and design mean a lot to them.
The partnership solidified after Mag’s solo album IGNJOY, particularly the tracks Klassik and Wa Swa Moloi. “The audience response is what really sparked the conversation. People genuinely thought we were already a duo. Eventually the question became: if everybody else can already see the equation, why are we pretending we can’t?”

Right now the most urgent theme in their catalogue is spirituality. “We are living in a time where a lot of people seem disconnected from their roots, their culture and even from themselves. Being connected to your roots is a superpower of its own. If you know where you come from, you have a better understanding of who you are and where you are going.”

Their latest single, Pray For Me featuring Chohkana, sits at the centre of that message. “At its core, the song is about acknowledging God as our Father first, while recognising the incredible role women play in our lives.”

Looking ahead, the calculation points to a full body of work. “We want bigger stages, bigger numbers and more building, but when we say ‘bigger’, we mean building something with longevity. There is also a strong education component. Our maths and science tutoring services are something we are still looking to grow. So, what’s the next calculation? We’re still solving for X, and when the answer comes, you’ll hear it.”
