Something Different Live Sessions celebrates first anniversary with star-studded event in Tembisa
Local talent and industry veterans unite for an unforgettable celebration as SDLS marks its one-year milestone with a vibrant anniversary show this long weekend.
Tembisa’s vibrant arts scene is set to shine brighter than ever, as Something Different Live Sessions (SDLS) gears up to celebrate its first anniversary, on May 2.
Organised by a dedicated team, including co-founder Siboniso ‘Raptyl’ Cebekhulu, the show promises to deliver top-tier entertainment that showcases the best of local talent. Raptyl shared that his team’s experience of over 11 months in event planning, made this milestone celebration manageable despite the challenges. “It’s been fun and exciting to plan for our anniversary. Working with my team makes everything easier, even though funding remains a challenge.” The team has been self-funding the event, with members contributing from their own pockets and praying for guidance to create an unforgettable experience for their audience.

The inspiration behind SDLS was to give young people in Tembisa the opportunity to display their talent. “Our goal was always to expose and showcase the talent in our hood.” Their collective effort involves entrepreneurs and creatives who are passionate about delivering memorable entertainment experiences.

For the upcoming event, all seven co-founders share a unified vision to make it the best yet. They’ve called on industry influence by inviting award-winning artists from the South African Music Awards (SAMA). “We wanted to bring big names alongside fresh talent from our community.” The line-up features two SAMA award-winning artists and numerous talented performers, all committed to celebrating local artistry.
Funding remains a challenge, but the team’s dedication keeps them motivated. “Every show has its own costs, and this one is no different, but we are committed to making it the biggest celebration we’ve had so far.” The audience’s ongoing engagement has been a source of encouragement, with supporters donating and sharing ideas to improve the movement.
