PSL footballer Sean Mogaila pleads guilty to culpable homicide following fatal Tembisa crash

A South African professional footballer accepts full responsibility for a head-on collision that cost a young girl her life and left two family members injured.

South African professional footballer Mokete Sean ‘Shaun’ Mogaila faces sentencing in November after admitting to charges of culpable homicide and failure to render assistance.

Mogaila (29) entered a guilty plea in terms of Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act when he appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court in October. In his plea statement, he admitted to all elements of the offences and accepted the State’s facts and allegations.

The charges stem from a collision during the early hours of October 30, 2024, on Andrew Mapheto Road in Tembisa. According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole, Mogaila admitted his vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and struck a car carrying a mother and her two children.

The crash claimed the life of nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela, while her mother and 13-year-old brother suffered serious injuries.
Following the incident, Mogaila fled the scene before surrendering to police at Rabie Ridge Police Station later that day. During the investigation, police found alcohol bottles and drugs inside his vehicle.

The court convicted Mogaila on three charges following his plea, with the matter postponed to November 17 for sentencing.

The NPA welcomed the conviction, noting that the guilty plea spared the family the burden of a lengthy trial and represented a step towards justice for the deceased child.
