Maintenance on ageing infrastructure in the City of Joburg is a major problem.
The current administration is faced with severely limited resources but when vandalism of that same resource occurs immediately after repairs have been affected, the resulting impact is felt far and wide.
I appeal to the public to desist from vandalising infrastructure.
Residents of Noordwyk can attest to the fact that power outages have been plaguing our suburb for a while. We have had an electricity box vandalised in a particular street in Noordwyk. The result was that power interruptions occurred regularly – to everyone’s detriment.
Residents discovered that the door to the box had been forced open. It was reported to City Power and on 7 December at 3.40pm, a resident informed me that the box was finally locked and secure.
Less than two hours later – at 5.15pm – she called me to say that the side lock on the same box had been cut open.
Another report has to be logged with City Power to effect repairs to the same box but on the other side, in less than 24 hours. It is ridiculous!
I am appealing to the community to stop this wanton destruction of property. It is unnecessary, costly and a dramatic waste of precious resources. It inconveniences far more people than it benefits.
