Summerhill’s head of sport excels in national netball league
MIDRAND – Summerhill School head of sport Keneiloe Kgasi performed exceptionally at the National Telkom Netball League.
Summerhill School’s head of sport Keneiloe Kgasi recently participated in the National Telkom Netball League.
Spokesperson for the school, Teressa Oates, said Kgasi, who is affectionately known at the school as Coach Kenny, participated as a member of the Mpumalanga Sunbirds at the tournament in Bloemfontein. Oates said, “Coach Kenny has been representing the Mpumalanga Sunbirds as a wing attack and goal attack. She was able to get her National Telkom Netball League campaign off to a great start by receiving a player of the match trophy in their third match against the Western Cape Tornadoes.”
Kgasi said, “I think with lockdown it was very hard because I wasn’t able to train as intensely as previous years. I definitely second-guessed if I was ready or not, going in, I was skeptical about whether I was ready. It was definitely validation that I was ready by winning the trophy.”
The Sunbirds played well and made it to the finals where they played against Kingdom Queens which they won by one point. The team, however, had to forfeit the win due to non-compliance in terms of racial transformation. She said, “I think after we left, it left a bad taste in our mouths. We were so close to getting a gold medal. That will always stick with us.”
Kgasi added that they were disappointed by the result and it showed in their performance in the third-place playoffs against Western Cape Tornadoes where they lost 25–44.
Kgasi concluded, “Two days after the tournament I missed seeing the team. I miss them at breakfast now, they are my sisters off the court… it was amazing playing alongside them.”
