Midrand giants are excited to be back

MIDRAND – Tshuma Stingers fullback, Collette Chawatama excited for practice to resume saying it is the first date towards retaining their trophies.

Tshuma Stingers Rugby Club hosted their first practice session on 26 November after months of a hard lockdown which halted all sporting activity.

The Midrand giants were excited and filled with energy as they can now bond as a team and work on preparing to compete once again.

Coach Vusi Barry said they were excited that finally sport was coming back. “We are going back into the new normal because we are doing things a bit different compared to before. Right now we have four weeks of preparation which entails preparing the body to get back into rugby while at the same time adhering to the Covid-19 regulations.

“In the first four weeks we will be conditioning the body and then after that, if we do get the go ahead, we will be introducing the ball and tackle bags,” added Barry.

Collette Chawatama, who plays fullback, added that ever since their first game this year they actually never got a chance to practise as a team, and go to gym and try and keep fit. “Most of us actually lost weight, some gained weight which is to some extent not good for the sport. But we managed to keep in touch as a team through virtual meetings just to make sure that the brotherhood of the team stays in tact.

“Today being the first day, I am really excited for practice to resume, it is the first date towards retaining our trophies and I am really happy to be getting back onto the field and starting work again,” said Chawatama.

Centre and winger for the Stingers, Kaamil Wicomb said being back was a big relief. “Sitting at home and doing nothing built up anxiety.

“Coming back to the field and seeing the guys is a relief because a lot of people see this like their break from the week.

“So I think this is our introduction to the season again.”
