Local dressage rider has her sights set high

KYALAMI – Dressage star discusses recent wins and her goals for the year.

Local dressage star Siobhan Records is still on a high from good results at recent shows, but is eager to go from strength to strength in 2021.

The horses she rode earned podium finishes in the Dressage South Africa Challenge and the Kyalami Park Dressage Championships at the end of last year.

Furthermore, Alexis Mowatt’s Hello Gorgeous competed in her first graded prelim show, and finished third in the warm-up on 71.74 per cent, then second in the DSA Challenge class with 71.08 per cent, putting her second in the country.

The same horse went on to win the prelim championship in the Kyalami Park Club Dressage Championship with 69.56 per cent, and was the prelim victor ludorum.

Some bonuses at the championship were Jessie Brar’s Seeis Sopranoure winning the Novice Championship and the novice victor ludorum, Claudia Privato’s El Encanto Sevilla winning the Medium 6 Championship and the medium victor ludorum and finally

Records’ own Rathmor Caprice winning the Inter B medium tour victor ludorum.

Records joked that one of her goals for the year was not being rained on while riding, but she had failed that miserably.

“If 2020 taught us anything, to paraphrase Helmut von Moltke, ‘no battle plan survives first contact’,” Records said in all seriousness.

“It was assuredly a year full of challenges for so many, which we are still facing, making 2021 planning quite tenuous – our world changes on a weekly basis.”

Nevertheless, Records has considered herself blessed with support from her team and sponsors, who have looked after her physical health

“One of my 2021 goals is to get stronger, both physically and mentally. So currently I have

upped my cycling to 10 to 15km five days a week, with weight training three to four days a week,” she explained.

Records is aiming at wins at some upcoming shows, these include Eaton Farm at the end of February, the Easter Festival at Kyalami Park Club, the CDI 2* in May, and the Dressage South Africa Challenge as well as the Gauteng Dressage Championships, both in May.

She concluded that there are a handful of horses she wants to see perform well this year and she is excited for the months ahead.
