Midrand Karate Academy awards five black belts

MIDRAND – Midrand Karate Academy awarded five students with black belts.

Midrand Karate Academy recently awarded black belts to five of their gifted students.

The dojo has been in operation for 10 years. Head instructor sensei Sergio Ferreira explained that last year, former head sensei Alfredo Ruocchio emigrated with his family with Ferreira taking over.

Ferreira said, “There are five students who were ready for the grading from brown belt to black belt. I carried on their education from the beginning of November almost right through December, only stopping for Christmas.”

The five students awarded black belts were Aliyah Bennett, Tyler Koekemoer, Henry Moyo, Natasha van der Schyff and Bridget Koekemoer.

He added, “Because of Covid-19, the grading process has been changed because there is no contact permitted so there is no kumite [kumite is the part of karate in which a person trains against an adversary], or fighting.

“So the grading was a very technical one, concentrating on basics and katas [choreographed pattern of martial arts movements]. This grading should have taken place last year in December but because of Covid-19 it was delayed to end of January.”

Ferreira added that he and other members of the dojo were incredibly proud of these students and their hard work throughout

last year.
