Volleyball contest is a roaring success

MIDRAND – "One of Midrand Volleyball's objective is to develop and create opportunities for the sport to be played at a social and competitive level," said Ron Pillay, Social Volleyball Tournament organiser.

Midrand Volleyball in partnership with Action Sports Midrand held a social volleyball tournament on 10 April with more than 20 teams competing.

Ron Pillay, player for the host team and organiser of the tournament said they had a vision to get the people of Midrand and surrounding areas involved in the sport of volleyball once again.

He added that the plan was to use the Action Sports Midrand arena as the home of Midrand Volleyball. “We decided that a tournament, which adhered to strict Covid-19 protocols, would be the best way to get the initiative off the ground.”

Pillay added, “What started off as a small social get-together, rapidly became one the biggest volleyball gatherings of the year.

“Twenty-eight teams registered to compete in the tournament. The diversity was amazing and a true testament that sport unites the nation.”

Pillay said the tournament generated a great deal of interest from players and supporters around the concept of action volleyball. He added that due to the interest in action volleyball, Midrand Volleyball in partnership with Action Sports Midrand would invest in a social league and other similar tournaments in the near future.

“One of Midrand Volleyball objectives is to develop and create opportunities for the sport to be played at a social and competitive level. The idea is to get more people, both young and old, involved in sport.”

“We were able to pull off a successful tournament. We could not have had a successful tournament without the assistance from our sponsors who made everything financially possible. We would like to make special mention and thank Macrocomm, E-thele, Security BIS, Vusela Risk Services, Spur Mall Of Africa, Indwe Risk Services, Kenny Abrahams and Keven Ramsamy for all their contributions.”
