Stingers bid farewell to their U17 team captain

MIDRANd – Tshuma Stingers founder, Ndumiso Tshuma said that it was easy for the club to spot Sifiso Swelindawo's abilities so the club immediately committed to nurturing his talent.

Members of Tshuma Stingers Rugby Club travelled to Qwaninga, Eastern Cape to pay their respects to one of their star players Sifiso Excellent Swelindawo who was being laid to rest on August 14.

The 16-year-old passed away on July 29 unexpectedly. He was captain of the Tshuma Stingers U17 team and played outside the centre, wearing his favourite number 13 jersey.

The club’s founder Ndumiso Tshuma told Midrand Reporter that the passing of Sifiso had left a huge void at the club.

“It is difficult to gather enough strength and express our sorrow to Swelindawo’s family and friends. The board of Midrand Stingers, executive management and all members of staff, collectively mourn the passing of this great young man, an exceptional player and leader,” he said.

“We met the young man in 2013 at the tender age of eight through our rugby and development player recruitment efforts at Drake Koka Primary School in Kaalfontein. It was easy for us to spot his abilities and so we immediately committed to nurturing his talent.

“Throughout his rugby life, Swelindawo was [awarded] with the junior player of the year award in 2015. He would scoop yet another award in 2017 as the most promising player, further going on to represent the club at the Golden Lions Rugby Union trials.”

Tshuma said last year Sifiso was shortlisted for the Golden Lions U16 team.
Sifiso’s father, Victor Dumile Swelindawo said, “Sifiso was a good boy, he would always listen to us his parents. Out of all my children, he was the respectful one.”
