Chloorkop Super Ladies and Ama 2000 crowned champs of Bob Maredi Legacy Cup first edition

The pressure was palpable as both the men's and women's finals ended on penalty shootouts, but, at the end of the day, it was Chloorkop Super Ladies and Ama 2000 FC that were triumphant.

The highly anticipated Bob Maredi Legacy Cup has officially concluded, bringing an exciting end to a thrilling tournament.

In the senior women’s category, Chloorkop Super Ladies emerged victorious, clinching the trophy in a nail-biting finish, while in the senior men’s division, Ama 2000 FC triumphed over their rivals.

This tournament, which was organised in partnership with Cell C and the Midrand Local Football Association, kicked off on January 26, showcasing a series of competitive matches that captivated both players and fans alike. The second round of the tournament took place on February 2, and the grand finals were held on February 16 at Rabie Ridge Stadium.

Bob Maredi, the tournament’s namesake and a respected figure in the local football community, expressed his satisfaction with the event. Maredi (72) reflected on the success of the tournament, emphasising the excitement that persisted all the way through to the finals. “We watched games of high standards. Players in both the women’s and men’s teams kept supporters on their feet by showcasing their God-given talent.”

Maredi continued to commend the efforts of the coaches who dedicated their time to developing these athletes, nurturing their talents and helping them shine on the field. “I must say that if football scouts were not there, they have missed out a lot,” acknowledging the high caliber of play that characterised the tournament.

Chloorkop Super Ladies faced off against Midrand Ladies in a tense final , which ended in a penalty shootout after a 1–1 draw during regulation time. The pressure was palpable as the teams battled for glory, but Chloorkop ultimately prevailed, winning the shootout 5–4.

The senior men’s final was equally dramatic, concluding in a penalty shootout after a scoreless 0–0 draw between Indlovu FC and Ama 2000.

Despite Indlovu having an early advantage, converting one of their first two penalties while Ama 2000 missed their first two chances, they ultimately fell short, with Ama 2000 winning the shootout 3–2.

The winners were presented with trophies and sports equipment, among other prizes. Maredi expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the tournament.

He specifically thanked the chairperson of the Midrand Local Football Association, Sthembiso Buthelezi, and the members of the executive local organising committee for their tireless efforts in bringing the tournament to life.

Ward 110 councillor Angie Mphaho was also present at the finals, and shared her thoughts stating that it was a celebration of local talent and community spirit.
