Region A Sports and Recreation hones girls’ talent on the pitch

The sixth edition of the U13 Primary School Girls Football Tournament, aligned with National Women’s Day, turns the spotlight onto young girls, their grit, and their dreams.

Now in its sixth edition, the City of Joburg Region A Sports and Recreation Department proudly held its annual U13 Primary Schools Girls Football Tournament at Rabie Ridge Stadium on August 9.

This tournament celebrates National Women’s Day by showcasing the talents of about 24 schools from across Joburg, all dedicated to empowering young girls through sports, dignity, and health.

Region A’s sports and recreation assistant director, Mandla Mahlangu, emphasised the critical mission behind this event: to uplift women and enhance the status of girls.

“These tournaments are vital for our young girls; ideally, they should take place throughout the year. However, due to resource limitations, we celebrate on Women’s Day. The girl child must be protected, acknowledged, and given these opportunities,” said Mahlangu.

The tournament is structured for competition, beginning with group stages where schools compete for top positions to advance to the knockout rounds. The final matches will conclude on the same day.

“This is our sixth edition, and we have consistently ensured its success each year. The most important aspect is to keep these children smiling and healthy. They are unconcerned with politics; they want to play.”

Defending champions Bonwelang face tough competition in their group from MC Weiler, Kanana, and Ebony Park. Group B features Iphutheni competing against Sedi Laka, Diepslot Combine, and Ebomini.

Among the notable attendees at the stadium was Phuti Lekoloane, founder and chairperson of the Phuti Lekoloane Foundation and the African Pride Games. Lekoloane understands the significance of such platforms for young girls.

“This initiative is critical for the girls because, for many, it is their sole opportunity to showcase their talents. This event fosters development, and we are witnessing plenty of talent that simply needs the right support and nurturing,” said Lekoloane.
