Montessori High baller scores chance to showcase talent in Spain

Talented Kyalami United FC player Amukelani Mokgope dreams of impressing top European scouts while he’s in Spain, but he needs help raising funds to make the trip possible.

For many teenagers, December marks the start of the holiday season. For Amukelani Mokgope, a Grade 10 learner at Midrand Montessori High, it presents an opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a professional footballer.

Amukelani, a talented midfielder, winger, and striker, has been selected to join Kyalami United FC on their international soccer tour in Spain, which departs on December 1.

The tour will see him compete in the U16 category and rub shoulders with some of the world’s rising football stars.

Last year, Kyalami United took their U10, U11, and U13 squads to Spain, where they competed in the Surf Cup International and attended elite coaching clinics, led by professor Josu Imanol Fandino, from the Barcelona Youth Programme, alongside coaches from Girona.

This year, it’s Amukelani turn to fly the flag for the older age group.

For the 16-year-old baller, who dreams of one day donning the colours of Barcelona or Real Madrid, this trip is a chance to be seen and possibly recognised by some of Spain’s biggest clubs.

“I’m very excited, and looking forward to impressing and staying in Spain,” said Amukelani.

While the opportunity is huge, financial hurdles remain. The cost of the trip stands at R60 000. The school has stepped in to help launch a fundraising campaign to ensure Amukelani can focus on the ball, not the bills.

Midrand Montessori High principal Sian Jackson-Morkel said Amukelani’s story inspires the entire school community.

“He has been part of our school since birth – the son of one of our cherished staff members – and we have proudly supported his education all these years. Today, he stands out as both a top learner, and a respected leader, chosen by his peers.”

She added that Amukelani’s journey, from kicking a ball at three years old to excelling in the SuperSport United Football Club global soccer schools international programme, is proof of his determination.

“We could not be prouder of the young man he has become: A dedicated student, a gifted athlete, and an inspiring role model. This opportunity is life-changing, and while it is a very expensive exercise, we will do everything we can to help him realise his dream.”

The school has appealed to the wider community to rally behind Amukelani.

“Every donation, no matter the size, will bring us one step closer to sending Amukelani to Spain… Together, we can help him take this important step in his football journey.”
