Capital Kollier carries Midrand equestrian to double derby triumph

Midrand’s own Dominey Alexander rode into glory at Kyalami Equestrian Park, earning the coveted Toyota Year of the Legend title and a brand-new Hilux to match.

Midrand equestrian Dominey Alexander has galloped his way into the history books. On October 5, he was crowned the 2025 Toyota Year of the Legend winner, on his horse, Capital Kollier, at the Kyalami Equestrian Park.

The talented rider did not stop there. He also claimed the title of 2025 Toyota SA Showjumping Derby Victor Ludorum, cementing his status as one of South Africa’s most accomplished showjumpers.

As the co-owner of Cellehof Stud in Midrand, Alexander competed on two horses, Athena VI and Capital Kollier, during this year’s derby. Known for his dual role as both a rider and a coach, Alexander says his passion for the sport extends beyond the saddle.

“I love being a competitor, as well as a coach. Each has its ups and downs. I am very fortunate that I get an equal thrill from winning myself, or coaching the winner.

“This means that I have no real preference, although I find riding, or competing myself, is significantly less stressful. I have a lot of clients competing at this year’s Toyota SA Derby because it’s the biggest show of the year, so, it attracts huge numbers in the ring.”

This year, Kyalami Park Club hosted the annual event under the theme: Year of the Legend, in partnership with Toyota South Africa.

Following last year’s successful Toyota Triple Crown, this year’s event upped the ante by adding dressage – an Olympic discipline – to the showjumping programme, drawing even more riders and spectators from across the country.

The 2025 edition promised bigger prizes, more participants, and a celebration of equestrian excellence, continuing the tradition of passion, precision, and professionalism that defines the sport.

Alexander expressed deep gratitude for Toyota’s continued investment in equestrian sport.

“Having Toyota sponsoring equestrian is just amazing. Every rider is truly grateful. Without sponsors like Toyota, our sport could not grow the way it has. We’re on the up, and it’s incredible to have their support.”

Reflecting on South Africa’s growing international competitiveness, he said: “The level of competition in South Africa has improved so much. Just look at Bronwyn Meredith De Santos, jumping at the World Cup Final in Basel – it shows how far we’ve come.”

Unlike many other sports, the equestrian calendar never truly stops. Riders, owners, grooms, and judges dedicate year-round effort to perfecting their craft, all driven by their shared love for horses and the pursuit of excellence.

As part of his triumph, Alexander will exchange his saddle for the strength and resilience represented by a brand-new Toyota Hilux D/C Legend, graciously sponsored by Toyota South Africa.
