Midrand has the ‘manliest’ man

MIDRAND - Johannes Mapalakanye has given Midrand a tough make-over.

The Midrand resident showed himself as the ‘manliest’ contestant after 13 gruelling weeks on an SABC 1 reality show, which was dubbed as ‘the ultimate man test’.

The 28-year-old won the third season of the show, and the finale was all it promised to be: adrenaline-packed and thrilling as the top three contestants, Bongs Ndima and Zweli Magaya, along with Mapalakanye, battled it out at the Orlando Towers in Soweto. It aired on 29 October.

Mapalakanye said he was very happy to have won. “Winning the competition really means a lot to me. I am the first black African man to ever win the competition: that forms part of our history. I have earned the title the hard way, it was not an easy challenge,” he said.

Mapalakanye added, “It felt good to win half a million rand. I never thought that one day I could have so much money in my bank account. I am planning to buy a house and if things go according to plan, I will open a community gym in my community in Kaalfontein. I intend to pursue a career in modelling and acting. I would like to encourage young people to stay away from alcohol and drugs, to focus on their dreams and achieve them.”

He took home R500 000 in cash, a double cab and a quad bike.

Mapalakanye, a stock controller, said the experience has been “worthwhile” and that he would do it all over again. He looks forward to a new life with his fiancee in their home. He said, “We are going to set the wedding date and start our future together.”

Mapalakanye, with his fiancee’s support, had put wedding preparations on hold to enter the reality show.
