Up close and personal with Khuli Chana

MIDRAND - SAMA award winning hip hop artist, Khulane Morule, known as Khuli Chana spoke to Midrand Reporter about his desire to move on with his life.

This after Bedfordview police shot Chana after mistaking his car for that of kidnappers. He was injured in his hand and back at a Caltex garage in Midrand in the early hours of 28 October.

After a near-death experience and allegations that police wanted to bring attempted murder charges against him, Chana hopes to move on and focus on his life.

The artist burst onto the stage at the South Africa Sports Awards in Sun City on 17 November, an experience he says was a welcome change.

Asked if he has fully recovered from the shooting, Chana said, “My wounds are still healing and I am having trauma counselling. I can still perform though.” He added that he is focused on his music and will not let the experience of the shooting hold him hostage, and said he would not be having much rest over the festive season.

“I will be working on Christmas day. I will still try and spend time with family. They have been great during this difficult time. I am thankful to my family and friends, and a successful year career-wise.”

Chana said that being a musician in South Africa has many challenges but one can overcome them with time. “The biggest challenge is starting out in the business and getting people to believe in you and your music.”

He mentioned that he wants to take his music to other parts of the world. “I don’t want to limit myself to the borders of South Africa, but of course, South Africa will always be home.”

Chana said he had performances lined up around South Africa during the festive season, including Port Elizabeth and Pretoria. He would also be performing in Botswana and Lesotho.

At the 19th annual MTN SAMA awards in May, Chana won awards for album of the year, best rap album, and male artist of the year.
