Celebrate The Shadows

MIDRAND - An exciting new fan club is offering upcoming artists a chance to play their music in Midrand. The South African Shadows Club Gauteng is a free club that takes on the form of the many Shadows clubs overseas.

The clubs got their name from Cliff Richard’s 1960s popular music group, The Shadows.

Harry Campbell said, “I started a club in Cape Town and it has been going strong for several years with a big support base, and some nights we had up to eight bands playing only the songs of Cliff and The Shadows.” Campbell has since moved to Gauteng and has endeavoured to get a Shadows club spirit going in Midrand.

Campbell said the event was for music fans of any level to attend. “Maybe you stopped because of the wife, maybe because of business, maybe you are a guitar hotshot or drummer who is still playing and just loves the music, or a fan who wants to listen to us try and get back into playing ‘that sound’. No matter the reason, here is a club where we can talk about and re-live those great days and the music.”

He urged men and women of all ages to strum their guitar strings and beat their drum sticks to enjoy some ’60s music.

“No backtracks at all, no click track, just live music. It does not matter if you are a bass man, drummer, keyboard [player], rhythm or lead, we make up the bands at the meetings.” Campbell urged those interested to just bring their instruments, especially guitarists, but drums and amps would be supplied. “For time and logistical reasons amps and drums are shared, but not guitars, effects and sticks,” said Campbell.

There is no membership fee. The first meeting will be held on 11 March from 7.30pm to 10pm at a still-to-be-confirmed location in Midrand.
