Dance drama to unfold

HALFWAY HOUSE - South African artists will bring classical ballet, drama, music and poetry to tell the compelling tale of Sri Krishna Leela in a dance drama.

The tale will be performed for the first time in Midrand on 18 May, and will be hosted by ISKCON Midrand in Halfway House Primary School’s Hall.

Nrsinga Dasa of ISKCON Midrand explained that the Sri Krishna Leela tale, which is a mesmerising interpretation of a legendary epic, has moved beyond religious, language and racial boundaries. This has made the production one of the most ideal and best experiences of the arts and it showcases creative abilities using the scriptures as the guiding and spiritual source.

“In fact, Sri Krishna Leela has performed all over South Africa and in nine cities in India under the auspices of the Foreign Ministry of India. Krishna Leela brings to communities an experience that has ingrained itself in centuries of history and the pages of the Vedic scripture Bhagavat Gita comes alive in the utmost devotion of the Gopis,” said Nrsinga Dasa.

He said it would be presented in traditional Bharata Natyam by South Africa’s renowned exponent and devotee of the art, Smt Verushka Pather and accompanied and supported by revered Shri Karthigasen Pillay.

“Shri Karthigasen Pillay is the senior disciple of the world renowned Shri TN Seshagopalan from Chennai India. He is the leading carnatic vocalist in South Africa today, due to his vast and integral contribution to the sustenance of the classical music genre,” said Nrsinga Dasa.

He said Smt. Verushka Pather is a devoted Bharata Natyam dancer, who is a senior disciple of Gurus, VP and Shanta Dhananjayan of Chennai, India. She has committed herself completely and comprehensively to the service of the arts in South Africa and globally.
