New netball team started by former beauty queen
MIDRAND – Sport is important in building a healthy lifestyle and encouraging a sense of community.
A new netball team, the Midrand Golden Eagles, took part in a netball tournament called, Lace Up and Play, which was organised by netball club Team Fitness from Kempton Park.
Thirty-two teams played against each other and the tournament winners were The Black Pearls from Witbank.
Midrand Golden Eagles captain, former Miss Gauteng 2011 and Miss Mzansi 2013 first runner-up, Sandile Maqoqa, said she was optimistic about the future of the new netball team. She explained, “I formed the team via social media platforms. I urge the community of Midrand to support the newly-formed Golden Eagles, and as captain, I am determined to get the Midrand community into a healthy lifestyle and to claim back our pride in our community.”
The team will be hosting many charity games and will donate the proceeds towards needy schools and orphanages. “My objective for establishing and coaching the sporting platforms, especially in Midrand and its neighbourhoods, is to encourage communities to stand up for a change and use sport as a common language to fight against challenges like xenophobia, street kids and youth-related crime,” she added
Maqoqa plans to expand this initiative across Gauteng. “We are planning a netball tournament soon and I have invited team leaders to bring their teams to the tournament. The tournament will be held in May at Midrand Primary and High School.”
