Do ‘everything bigger and better’

MIDRAND- Miss Pru celebrates 10 years of DJing.

Midrand-based DJ Prudence Sebalo has a gift and passion for making people dance.

Sebalo, also known as Miss Pru always knew that she loved music.

“While I was doing my second year in somatology, I took part in extra activities in drama and dance, but it did not work out,” said Miss Pru.

“After I tried dancing, I thought maybe I should learn how to DJ because it makes people dance.”

She joined Fuse Academy in 2009 and completed her DJ qualification and became a lecturer at the school. The beautician turned DJ attributes her success to the life lessons that mentor DJ Zinhle taught her.

“Everything that she taught me during that time helped me to get to where I am now. After she set me free into the world, I took the lessons and put them into play.”

Since her mentoring days with DJ Zinhle, the 27-year-old artist has become a household name.

She has played on local and international stages and has several awards and singles under her belt.

Her hip-hop single Ameni released in 2016 earned her two South African Hip Hop Awards for best collaboration and best music video of the year. It also earned her a Metro FM Music Award as well as an award for Best Music Video at the 23rd Annual South African Music Awards.

When asked about breaking the barriers in the male-dominated industry, Miss Pru said first and foremost she was a DJ. “I hope that future female DJs will get that mentality that first and foremost they are DJs, it will help them get through a lot of the things that we struggle with, unfortunately, as females in the industry.

“When I started out, I met other DJs who told me not to start with the mentality that you are a female DJ because that is where it all goes wrong.”

This year is a milestone for Miss Pru, as she is celebrating 10 years in the industry. She wants to do ‘everything [bigger] and better this year’. “This year I will be dropping a lot of music and when the time is right I will drop an album.”
