AQEEL RAWJEE: I usually spend time with my friends and enjoy the freedom that we have. We pay homage to the purpose of having Heritage Day because people sacrificed their lives so we could live better.
With Heritage Day coming up on September 24, the Midrand Reporter asked residents to find out how they would be celebrating the day.
This is what they had to say…
CHARLOTTE THIAMO: We come together as a family, dressed up in our cultural attire, and cook. This time around we have called our family members from both the Zulu and the Portuguese side to celebrate with us.TARYN-LEE SOMIAH: On each Heritage Day I dress up as a different culture. On this one I plan on dressing up in a Zulu attire and then just spend time with the family.WARD 80 COUNCILLOR, MAKGOBA PAGADI: Usually, how we celebrate is by having an elder cut our hair before the full moon appears. On Heritage Day, we then gather and sing traditional songs, among other things.
