Midrand High School Grade 12 learner Moalusi Mothabeleng Mphafudi aka Sprago has been a hip-hop artist, DJ and a grime and boombap rapper since he was 12.

He said, “I began seriously writing music because of my uncle Ronnie Mphafudi who is also a hip-hop artist and Jayson Mick Jenkins, an American rapper born in Huntsville, Alabama. Over the years I have redefined my craft to represent Midrand.”

When he turned 15, Moalusi said he got tired of just writing music and he started looking for work in the music industry but ended up starting his own record label, MidcityClout.

Speaking about his music he said, “My music is inspired by the 80s era, with vintage melodies and drums. I hope to open for established artists like Shane Eagle one day.”

He said it was a challenge to balance school and his music aspirations at first but he managed by putting together a home studio to produce his music. “I want to study business management as an artist needs both creativity and business knowledge to succeed.”

Moalusi’s mother Mapula Mphafudi is his number one fan and her ringtone is one of her son’s songs. “He is my first born and very loving, humble and very respectful. At first, I was not supportive because it was impacting very badly on his schoolwork, but as time went on he managed to juggle both. I’m very proud of him and I support him 100%.”

Mphafudi aka Pipper said, “I am humbled that Moalusi says I inspire him and his inspiration comes from conversations we have about life. I encourage upcoming artists to stay true to their values and balance their art with reality, not to be caught up with fame.”
