Greater Midrand and Ivory Park residents lace up for Rabie Ridge fun walk

Community members lace up their running shoes for a morning of exercise, community connection, and wellness in Region A.

From grandmothers who refuse to let age slow them down to residents eager to break a sweat, nearly 200 people gathered at Rabie Ridge Stadium on November 7 for a free fitness fun day.

Hosted by local fitness clubs, the event attracted participants from Greater Midrand, Greater Ivory Park and surrounding communities, with residents lacing up their takkies for a 5km fun walk, run and aerobics session.

The fitness day has become part of the growing sporting and recreational activities in Region A, encouraging residents of all ages to embrace exercise while creating opportunities to socialise and connect with their neighbours.

Among those who enthusiastically participated was resident Elizabeth Machate, who proudly described herself as a grandmother who loves going to the gym.

“I am a granny who gyms. I love to gym. I also love to walk, as today we walked. These fitness days are treating us nicely. We love them,” she said.

Machate encouraged other community members, particularly older residents, to get out of their homes and participate in physical activities, saying exercise was important for maintaining their health.

“Community members and old people, get out and come join us to avoid getting sick. Me, I love to gym. I wish I could gym every day,” she added.

Another participant, Lakeisha Seleke, said the activities were enjoyable and encouraged more residents to join the fun walk and aerobics. “

We are at Rabie Ridge Stadium for the fun walk and aerobics. So far, it is actually going well. If you want to join us, you can come whenever you want,” she said.

The event offered residents an opportunity to enjoy physical activity in a welcoming community environment, with participants highlighting the importance of keeping active regardless of age or fitness level.

Through initiatives such as these, local fitness clubs continue to encourage residents to make exercise part of their everyday lives while strengthening community connections through sport and recreation.
