Five men appeared in court for shooting at police

The police received information regarding two suspicious-looking men, who were spotted at a Shopping Complex in Komatipoort.

KOMATIPOORT – Five suspects aged between 20 and 42 appeared before the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court in Tonga, on charges of attempted murder yesterday.

They were arrested after an alleged shoot-out on with police on Tuesday.

The police received information regarding two suspicious-looking men, who were spotted at a Shopping Complex in Komatipoort. When police arrived at the scene, they spotted the men in question boarding a blue Golf which had other occupants.

The Golf drove off at high speed and police gave chase signalling to them to halt, instead the occupants fired shots at the police and they (police) retaliated.

The suspects then stopped their vehicle and fled on foot through the sugar cane field.

They continued to fire shots at the police while running away and back-up was summoned. Police managed to corner and arrest two of the suspects and confiscated their vehicle.

The sustained search yielded results when three more men suspected to be involved were later arrested at Malalane.
