No ends in sight for school’s plight
the school does not have enough furniture and three learners have to share a desk

MATSULU – A school still awaits help from the Department of Education, six months after a storm caused major damage to its facilities.
The anxious parents of Takheleni Primary School learners have expressed their frustration with regard to the slow process of fixing the classrooms.
Since then, the department has not done anything even after the school had reported the matter the day after the storm.
Severe damage was done to one class and it affected two of the other ones and as a result, all the grade six pupils had been cramped into one class.
According to Mr Norman Mbokodo, a member of the school governing body (SGB), the department came to assess the situation after it had reported the damage and promised to get back to the school, but it hadn’t thus far.
The school does not have furniture and as a result three learners have to share a desk, others have brought their own chairs and some are using buckets and wood as their chairs.
“It becomes very hard for teachers to control an overcrowded class and this leads to a situation where many of the learners lose concentration,” said Mbokodo. Last month they went to the head office of the department, and did not receive a straight answer from the officials as they said they would check if the school was on the list.
” “They also promised to get back to us, but up until today, we have not heard anything from them and when we try to call, we can’t reach them,” he said.
“We can’t risk the lives of our children. If we had enough funds to fix the damage, we would have done something,” said Mbokodo.
Mpumalanga News attempted to contact the spokesman for education,
Mr Jasper Zwane but could not reach him for comment at the time of going to print.
