Schools in Mpumalanga receive support in a fight against underage gambling

The National Responsible Gambling Programme is creating awareness campaigns to educate learners about the dangers of illegal gambling.

The National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP) has, since the beginning of May, intensified efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal gambling among learners across Mpumalanga. The organisation recently conducted an awareness campaign, visiting schools in the Nkomazi, City of Mbombela and Thaba Chweu local municipalities.

The campaign focused on educating learners about the dangers of gambling and providing coping mechanisms for stress caused by financial difficulties at home.

Organisers of the campaign believe that learners turn to gambling due to stress, peer pressure, or a desire for excitement and social acceptance. According to research, several factors may contribute to early gambling exposure or initiation, including easy access to gambling platforms and advertising, as well as personality traits linked to risk-taking and sensation-seeking behaviour.

The campaign was facilitated at Mashishing Secondary School.

Executive director of South African Responsible Gambling Activities Sibongile Simelane Quntana, said the “Taking Risks Wisely” initiative, in partnership with the Hollywood Foundation and the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator, aims to promote harm reduction and healthy coping strategies.

The programme also educates learners about alternative forms of entertainment and ensures they understand the legal restrictions surrounding gambling for minors, the risks and consequences associated with gambling at a young age, and the support and treatment options available for those affected by gambling addiction.

“We look forward to running successful sessions in various municipal areas across Mpumalanga and working towards reducing the number of learners who fall victim to underage gambling behaviour,” said Quntana.

The NRGP also offers psychoeducational and psychotherapeutic counselling services for minors affected by gambling, with parental or legal guardian consent. These services are also available to adults.
