KABOKWENI – In a raid to reduce crime at schools, the local police in association with community safety, security and liaison paid a surprise visit to three high schools in the area, Khutsalani, Vulindlela and Hlangani last Wednesday and Thursday.
The police seized dagga, a knife and screwdrivers, and a laptop and cellphones were given back to the headmasters of the schools.
Two learners were arrested for being in possession of drugs and another for being in possession of a knife. They were later released because they were minors and strongly reprimanded. The search led by
Col Ntombivelile Xhelithole started at Vulindlela High School and then proceeded to Khutsalani on the same day.
Hlangani High School received a visit the following day. The pupils were searched with the help of a canine from the K9 Dog Unit. It assisted in finding dagga at Vulindlela and a few hidden cellphones.
According to Capt Shirley Ngomane, the programme is ongoing and the aim is to cover problematic schools around the township and encourage the youth to refrain from all criminal activities at all costs.
“The reason why we took the cellphones to the school headmasters was for them to report back in a parents meeting on the issues of schoolchildren carrying phones and other gadgets as they disturb learning and this causes conflict among the pupils,” said Ngomane.
She also added that they were trying to send a message that a crime-free community started with children at school.
The police encouraged learners to stay way from drugs.
“We are doing this to ensure safer schools and they should also refrain from bullying other kids. Parents must work hand in hand with the principals and the school governing body in applying the school policies. They must also assist in making sure that youngsters don’t carry dangerous weapons,” conluded Ngomane.
