Mayor calls for female empowerment
Females owe it to themselves to stand up and do things for themselves and be counted among their male counterparts.
NELSPRUIT – A call for all women to emancipate themselves from socio-economic and political slavery has been made and it’s up to them to stand up and act.
This was made by the Mbombela executive mayor, Cllr Cathy Dlamini whose municipality hosted female councillors from Molemole Local Municipality in Limpopo last Friday.
Dlamini told this newspaper that government had many different programmes specially designed to develop and uplift the standard of living for women.
“Females owe it to them-selves to stand up and do things for themselves and be counted among their male counterparts.
“Since taking over, the ANC-led government has made it easy and possible for them to empower themselves and it is for this reason that we appeal to them not to wait for leftovers but rather share the greater stage with everyone else,” she said.
Dlamini also mentioned the fact that female farm workers were still not free and stressed the need to help empower them.
“Many of our women are still subjected to extreme abuse at the hands of their employers, because they don’t know their rights. It is not only the government’s duty to go out there and educate them, but all of us can play a meaningful role in assisting them.
“The one thing that is never going to change is that the ANC government will continue to fight until all women are free from poverty, abuse and other inequalities,” said Dlamini.
