New road shows signs of damage

A month after completion, sections of the R40 to Hazyview are showing signs of damage.

WHITE RIVER – The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral), commissioned an upgrade to the road and the construction of a traffic circle at the Casterbridge Centre at a cost of R103m. Work commenced in 2011 and was completed in July 2013.

According to Mr Vusi Mona, general manager of communications at Sanral, the stone loss currently visible on extended sections of the road is due to traffic overtaking in the closure and the premature opening of the affected area. Slow-moving heavyweight vehicles led to illegal overtaking by lighter ones over the work area. The cold weather and shaded areas in that vicinity also contributed, Mona said.

The current state of the road is not considered by Sanral as a safety risk, and Mona confirmed that repair work would be done on an ongoing basis.
