Residents warned about veld fires

MBOMBELA – The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs has warned residents of possible veld fires due to high temperatures and strong winds.This after the South African Weather Service has forecasted a high fire index. These conditions are expected in the entire province from Wednesday to Saturday. The department has also requested members of the public to ensure that they do not start fires in the open veld. For controlled fires they should make sure that the fires are completely put out before leaving the area. Parents should also take care that children do no start fires and motorists have been warned to slow down when driving in areas where there is smoke.

The department has also instructed all municipalities to be on full alert and standby for any possible fires. Residents have been urged to report any fires to their closest fire station as quick as possible.
