Municipality celebrates global hands wash day with learners
The importance of the day was to encourage people to wash their hands so that they can prevent being affected by diseases.
BARBERTON – Ehlanzeni district municipality celebrated the global hands wash day with learners of Ekucathuzeni primary school recently.
The importance of the day was to encourage people to wash their hands so that they can prevent being affected by diseases, also aimed to reduce child death and also to decrease cases of diarrhoea which is the goal of the United Nations.
Speaking to Mpumalanga News, the acting manager municipal health and environmental manager, Ms Funeka Bongweni said: “This day is important because we teach our children about the importance of keeping their hands clean so that they can be protected.”
This paper learnt that normally the municipality celebrates the day with primary schools and when asked why they are targeting them Bongweni said: “The reason why we always celebrate this day with primary schools is that kids are good listeners and when we teach them, we send a message to the right people because they are able to forward the message to parents, as well as the community members,“ she explained.
Ms Wendy Mondlane from department of health who was sharing the stage with other guest speakers, said in most cases people atttact contaminative diseases because they touch dirty staff and don’t bother to wash their hands and she went on: “People can get sick easily because they are lazy to wash hands. For an example, after they have relieved themselves, the next thing that person is eating . This is any opportunity to teach our children about cleanliness at an early age, it’s not just a celebration,“ she ended.
