Youth League favours Ehlanzeni-based chairman

Former Ehlanzeni spokesman a favourite among provincial ANCYL members for the position of chairman.

MBOMBELA – Some of the provincial branches and regions of the ANC Youth League (Ancyl) are pushing for the former Ehlanzeni regional spokesperson, Mr Desmond Moale to become the new league’s provincial chairperson.

The youth league will host its historic elective conference scheduled for this weekend in Secunda.

It has emerged from branch and regional meetings that serious issues and the future of the youth league including its leadership were discussed at length and Moela was therefore brought forward.

Even though the provincial task team (PTT) hasn’t officially said anything on the leadership race, sourced information suggested that it was aware of the branches’ call for Moela to lead the “new-look” youth league.

The PTT spokesperson, Ms Sindisiwe Mkhumbane confirmed the sitting of the congress but declined to comment on the candidate race saying that eligible congress candidates would pronounce themselves during the conference.

For the past couple of years, this position was held by the Gert Sibande-born, Mr Kgotso Motloung who vacated his seat after Ancyl was disbanded by the ruling party ANC following reports of ill-discipline within the movement.

A source revealed that the regions wanted a change in leadership and wanted the chairperson to come from Ehlanzeni and other members of the top five to have representation of all the other regions, which were Bohlabela, Nkangala and Gert Sibande, to show a united and balanced revamped youth league.

Moale couldn’t be reached for comment at the time of going to print.

The Ancyl’s national leadership will be held in September.
