NELSPRUIT – The province’s first university officially welcomed its first intake of students this morning.
The opening of the 2014 academic year was held in the hall of the University of Mpumalanga at the Lowveld Agriculture College where the university is situated.
Mr Mduduzi Manana, deputy minister of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) who also hails from Ermelo in the province, welcomed the students to the historic event. He said he hoped they, the youth, would use education to fight poverty.
Prof Ramaranka Mogotlane, the interim head of the university, said the students must fight against what he called an unholy trinity at work in South Africa: that of ignorance, unemployment and poverty.
