NELSPRUIT- Nine of the 24 suspects arrested in connection with defrauding South African Revenue Services (SARS) with more than R7 million appeared in the Nelspruit District Court last week.

They were arrested by members of the Commercial Crime Unit of the Hawks and SARS in Mpumalanga on February 11.

They were not asked to plead and the matter was postponed for further investigation to April 22. The suspects were released on different bail amounts. Hawks spokesperson, Paul Ramoloko, said the suspects were accused of submitting false claims through the use of the e-filing system.

“The money was paid to them between May and August 2013. They are aged between 22 and 49 years,” he said.

He added that the other 14 had also appeared in different courts where they also received bail except for one who had a pending similar offence.
