Aero club flies high for CANSA
The Lowveld Aero Club hosted the annual CANSA Shavathon this weekend, but added a little extra to the mix.
NELSPRUIT – The Lowveld Aero Club, under the chairmanship of Pug Steyn, decided three years ago to host the annual CANSA Shavathon, but wanted to add a little extra to the mix. At a personal cost in fuel and flying time, pilots volunteer for the day and take visitors on flights in their own planes. The amount charged for a flight is donated to CANSA. Last year was a resounding success and the club made a significant contribution.
This year it once again went the extra mile. It was a gorgeous sunny day with perfect conditions for flying.
Steyn asked Ivan van Schaar to fly his Pitts Special down from Johannesburg to add some excitement. This aerobatic aircraft was seen doing loops and fly overs with a passenger who asked for as many “Gs” as possible.
There were pilots from far and wide on hand, all willing to become involved and support this fantastic initiative.
Club members and visitors snacked on delicious prego rolls and quenched their thirst with Vitamin Water sponsored by Coca-Cola. After the weekend, the leftover hairspray was donated to a primary school.
They’ll enjoy their own mini-Shavathon and proudly donate what they raise.
On behalf of this journalist and the CANSA Shavathon fund-raising team, we salute the pilots and members of the Lowveld Aero Club for going the extra mile!
