Schools receive water
This comes after a private company identified a project to help schools gain access to potable water.

MBOMBELA – In a bid to address the water backlog in some communities including schools in those areas, a private company identified a project to help schools gain access to potable water.
“Lafarge was delighted to contribute to providing a solution for the lack of water facing these schools,” said Ms Nondumiso Radebe, Social Compliance and Sustainability Coordinator for Lafarge South Africa. She added that: “It has been wonderful to see the pleasure it has given the staff and pupils at the schools to have easy access to the supply of good quality water!”
Radebe indicated that previously learners were forced to walk long distances to fetch drinking water from a neighbouring source which as a result interrupted the time they had available for their studies.
The initiative saw Lafarge partnering with the Autotec Foundation and the regional Department of Education, and as a result sponsored the drilling of boreholes for Sandzile Primary School, Tsembaletfu Primary School, Tendele Crèche, Phatfwa High School and Khumbula High School.Lafarge also installed their innovative porous pavement concrete, Hydromedia, around the borehole sites.
This allowed all the water, which would have been washed off or wasted, to be collected and used on the school’s gardens. The innovative drainage technology in Hydromedia has been developed by the international Lafarge Group.
Lafarge South Africa’s Country CEO, Thierry Legrand commented: “At Lafarge we are committed to helping our neighbours to better their circumstances and, in particular, to improve skill levels and standards of education.”
