Patients say they are not cared for

Several patients at Bongani Hospital are complaining about taking treatment on empty stomachs, which they claim delays their recovery process.

HAZYVIEW – Several patients at Bongani Hospital are complaining about taking treatment on empty stomachs, which they claim delays their recovery process.

In June , Mpumalanga News reported about a woman who had to wait for her relatives’ visit so she could eat because nurses did not want to help and feed her since she was too weak to eat on her own.

When we visited her at the institution, the patient who was too frail and was speaking with difficulty, revealed that the staff would leave her food on the table next to her bed and after some time they would remove it, not caring if she had eaten or not.

On Thursday last week another patient called this publication with the same frustration.
“It’s tough here and only the tough survive,”she said.

If you are too weak to eat you’ll have to take treatment without eating and that makes us weak and nauseous because the treatment is very strong,” said the patient who wished to remain anonymous, fearing to be victimised by the staff.

The dissatisfied patient also added that some of them, especially the stronger ones had to clean their wards themselves.

When we approached the health department with these allegations, the spokesperson said that they will investigate the matter.
