Rape case postponed

Mpumalanga News learnt that before Maphanga was arrested, he was brutally assaulted by angry community members and family members also accused police officers who attended the scene of misusing their powers.

MATSULU – A case of a 80-year-old man accused of raping a three-year-old girl has been postponed at the local magistrate’s court.

This comes after a police officer who is in charge of the case, failed to arrive in court with the docket.

The suspect, Mr Jantji Maphanga, was arrested last week on allegations of rape.

Mpumalanga News learnt that before Maphanga was arrested, he was brutally assaulted by angry community members and family members also accused police officers who attended the scene of misusing their powers.

One of the family members, Mr Vusi Maphanga was previously quoted by this publication last week saying:

“My grandfather was beaten and when police arrived, they assaulted him, too before taking him to the police station. What they did is totally unacceptable. When my grandpa wanted to open a case against the police who assaulted him, they refused,“ he explained.
