Police raid schools to disarm learners

Teachers at the schools expressed delight at the surprise visits by the officers and urged them to do it on a regular basis.

PIENAAR – Local and Mbombela police officers stepped in to ensure the safety of learners at schools in a bid to prevent another death.

This was after a pupil was stabbed to death during a Valentine Day’s event at Gedlembane Secondary School in a fight over a girlfriend.

The officials went to Gedlembane and other schools to educate and search the learners for dangerous weapons.

At Gedlembane, two boys were found in possession of dagga. In other schools the officers discovered knives, cellphones, hats and jewellery.

At Mayibuye Secondary School it had been reported that there was a learner who brought a gun to school, but unfortunately on the day the officers arrived there, he was absent. Strict discipline was instilled in the learners, as some of those who misbehaved were ordered to do push-ups.

No one was arrested.
