Mother mourns death of child

KAMHLUSHWA – The pain a mother who just lost her child had to bear, was evidently nothing compared to watching him live through six years of agony.
Laura Cossa, against all odds tried to get help for her eight-year-old son, but said nothing seemed to ease his pain.
“Seeing my late son go through so much pain and knowing there was nothing I could do to help, killed me. He suffered from bone-marrow cancer and we went from one hospital to the next, but his health kept deteriorating.
My son died on Monday and I think he is in a better place now. The worst part of this scenario is that I don’t work and his father passed on some seven years ago. I live on handouts, I have been in South Africa for more than 20 years, but still have no South African ID. This life is just agony, I live in destitute,” said Cossa.
She said her landlord had been gracious to her, but since the child died at home, he wanted the house cleansed with a goat. “My landlord has been merciful, I stay here for free. But since my child died here, they insist that I cleanse the whole place with a goat.
I don’t even have money to buy necessities for myself. I need all the help I can get. My landlord says I shouldn’t go look for employment far because I might run away and leave his home cursed,” she concluded in tears.
