According to studies ,400 million people lives with hepatitis B or C in the whole world. Every year 1.4 million people die from viral hepatitis and yet all of these deaths could be prevented.
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. It can affect any individual of any age including children. Hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) most commonly cause viral hepatitis. Nevertheless, hepatitis D and E viruses also exist. Other common causes of hepatitis include- infections, toxic substances (e.g. alcohol, certain drugs), autoimmune diseases and metabolic disorders.
Risk factors, symptoms and causes are commonly found in children and are usually spread by fecal-oral contact or fecal-infected food and water. A baby can also get hepatitis C from his/her infected mother.
These conditions can be diagnosed through blood tests. Other tests and diagnostic procedures to determine the extent of the disease include CT scans and MRI.
Speaking to locally based dietician Dr Silver Masango she explains Hepatitis is a very serious disease, which needs a very important attention in terms of preventing. Yet good hygiene can help prevent the risk of being spread of Hepatitis.
She added eating healthy food is very important than eating junk food. “Avoid drinking alcohol, use purified water. Fresh fruits and vegetables are very important. People must take care of their diet through healthy life style, as it is so difficult to get liver donor, we must be very careful”, she said.
