Dad sentenced for son’s murder

According to the charge sheet, the couple’s son, Kgetho Job Mashego tried to flee from his fighting parents, but his father stabbed him too and then fled the scene leaving his bleeding wife and son behind.

BURGERSFORT – A 37-year-old man was sentenced to an effective 15 years’ imprisonment for the murder of his seven-year-old son, who was stabbed to death during a fight between the man and child’s mom. This tragic incidence left Ponono Ben Mahubedi’s family of Ga-Manoke Village outside town torn apart.

On April 25 last year a heated argument broke out between Mahubedi and his wife, Ms Martha Mashego after he came home late that night. As the fight evolved Mahubedi stabbed Mashego several times with a sharp object over her body. According to the charge sheet, the couple’s son, Kgetho Job Mashego tried to flee from his fighting parents, but his father stabbed him too and then fled the scene leaving his bleeding wife and son behind.

The two were rushed to Dilokong Hospital, unfortunately the little boy was certified dead on reaching the hospital. According to the post-mortem, the cause of his death was a sharp-force trauma to his neck. Appearing in the Gauteng division of the Pretoria High Court of South Africa seated in Mbombela, Mahubedi pleaded guilty to both counts of attempted murder and murder.

The judge, Mr Brian Mashile did not hesitate to sentence him to five years’ imprisonment for the attempted murder of his wife and 15 years for the murder of their son. Both sentences will run concurrently.
